In 2018, I faced a pivotal moment when I was compelled to resign from my job in Senegal due to sexual harassment and a toxic work environment. This unplanned departure plunged me into a period of suspense and emotional turmoil. I found myself unemployed, relying on food stamps and unemployment benefits, and grappling with mounting debt - debt I once had under control because I had a paycheck. To compound the emotional toll, I was also mourning the sudden loss of a dear friend who was my rock, my defender, my protector, and my delight. Nafi was her name. She died from Hepatitis B, and I did not have the chance to say goodbye. That shattered me.
Born and raised in a Ghanaian and African household, my upbringing instilled deep-seated unfavorable beliefs about money and mental health—topics often veiled in taboo and discomfort. Financial talks were sparse, and the stigma surrounding financial instability loomed large. Yet, amidst these challenges, I found a beacon of hope: the opportunity to break generational cycles and redefine my relationship with money in the dark pit of job loss, thousands in debt, delinquent payments, and mental collapse.
Breaking the Silence: From Crisis to Empowerment
My journey highlights a common narrative among many—navigating financial instability without a blueprint for recovery and from a background where money management was not discussed or taught. With no prior financial foundation to reference or nuclear examples to look up to, I embarked on a lonely and transformative path of self-discovery and forgiveness, both toward my upbringing and my lack of knowledge due to my lack of exposure. I did not know what I should know, and I had to forgive my upbringing for that. This journey became the catalyst for my passion to empower others facing similar challenges.
Through rigorous studying, reaching out for offered free help, and watching endless YouTube videos, I began again. I saw where I could have better prepared for my future, where I could have slowed down on my spending and generosity, increased savings, and started investing. Many of the "lessons" were not lessons because I did not experience knowing and not doing better - I was learning new things, and I had to remind myself to see the difference and not punish myself further. I did not know what I should have known.
